One Day in Nebraska: One of the top five zoos in the world. Where the Reuben sandwich was invented. I am Mira Patel a travelling enthusiast. After having our world turned upside down in 2020, I decided to set out on our biggest adventure yet: to see all 50 states in a year.

In our last article, we were at the Rome where we ate more than our share of delicious fair foods, had so much fun. We discovered different places and created 2 days Rome itinerary for you, I hope you have read the article if not then read it from here : How to Spend 2 Days in Rome | What to See And What to Do

Welcome to Nebraska

When you hear us say Nebraska, you’re probably thinking cows in cornfields, and you wouldn’t be wrong, but there’s a whole lot more to this state than its agriculture, and we’re gonna set out to prove it. Today we’re in Omaha, which is the state’s largest city, and we only have one day to explore the best that it has to offer.

Archetype Coffee

We’re gonna start things off with the best cup of coffee in the city, or in Natalie’s case, chai. Archetype Coffee, let’s go!

One Day in Nebraska | Itinerary

So I just got my caffeine fix, and it was awesome. It was tough to talk inside because the music was playing—#copyright. I got the nitro, which was delicious, and Natalie got the chai, per usual. We can’t say enough great things about it. The vibe in there was awesome, the coffee was great, and the banana bread—yeah, totally go. Absolutely, if you’re in Omaha, come to Archetype.

Exploring Little Bohemia

Archetype is in this little neighborhood called Little Bohemia, and it’s really cool, so we’re gonna explore it. It’s known as the melting pot of Omaha with lots of cultures and backgrounds represented here, and we’re excited to check it out.

One Day in Nebraska | Itinerary

As most of you know, we travel during the week, which has its pros but also its cons. The con today is that nothing was really open, but I think Matt did it on purpose so he didn’t have to spend any money. He called ahead and made sure every boutique and clothing shop was closed.

Inner Rail Food Hall

Since shopping wasn’t open, we’re gonna do the next best thing: eat. We love a good food haul, so we’re gonna check out Inner Rail Food Hall. It opened in 2019 and used to be a horse racing track.

I’m not gonna lie, it doesn’t look all that impressive, but I’m not gonna judge a book by its cover. The reviews were good, so we’ll see. Just like you should not judge a YouTube video on its thumbnail. Okay, really, you probably can. Same thing with a book; that’s what I do—I always pick a really pretty cover.

The pizza is solid; it’s not amazing, but it’s good. The place is probably mostly about the vibe and the atmosphere more than it is about the food. The food’s good, but the atmosphere is way better.

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo

Now that our stomachs are full, we are headed to the zoo. More specifically, we’re headed to the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo, which has consistently been ranked one of the top five zoos in the world. Who would have thought it was here in Nebraska?

I apologize for saying “let’s go” all the time. I need a T-shirt that says “let’s go” because that’s me. Look how cute this little greenhouse is. I wish I could keep plants alive.

This zoo is actually really cool. There’s a lot of stuff that I’ve never seen before, so kudos. This thing is huge, just for reference.

One Day in Nebraska | Itinerary

We just heard that there’s a baby giraffe that’s only two weeks old, so we’re gonna try to find it. We didn’t see the baby giraffe, but we’re still here in Africa, so there’s a chance. Now, we’re going to see the elephants.

Hands down, the best ride at the zoo was the shuttle. It was free and included, which was a lifesaver going up the hill. There’s not a lot of action through there, especially right now in midweek when some of those exhibits are closed.

We finished at the zoo, and it actually was a lot of fun. My feet hurt because it was so big. There was a lot of walking involved, and I didn’t wear the right shoes, but they really did have a lot of awesome exhibits and a lot of animals that I’ve never even seen or heard of before. We definitely recommend it.

The Old Market

Now, we’re going to be headed to a neighborhood called the Old Market. Old Market is right up my alley—it’s industrial with ivy everywhere, and it is just beautiful. I am in heaven.

One Day in Nebraska | Itinerary

We had plans to go to a couple of different riverfront parks, but they’re all closed due to construction. They’re all part of a riverfront revitalization project which isn’t scheduled to be finished until sometime in 2022. The famous Bob Kerry Bridge, which we’re looking at right now here on the river, is open, so we’re gonna check it out and walk to Iowa.

If you’ve ever watched “A Walk to Remember,” one of her bucket list items was being in two places at once, and this is it. We’re states away from each other—he’s in Iowa, and I’m in Nebraska. Welcome to Nebraska.

Dinner at Crescent Moon

We’re here in the Blackstone District, a really cool neighborhood full of great shopping and great restaurants. We’re eating at Crescent Moon, which supposedly is where the Reuben sandwich was invented. There’s a lot of debate surrounding this—whether it was invented here or in New York. We’re not taking sides; don’t come for us. We just want to eat a good Reuben sandwich.

One Day in Nebraska | Itinerary

I’ve never had a Reuben sandwich, so I don’t even know if I like them. That was really good. The corned beef is so tender, the sauerkraut has just the right amount of tartness, the thousand island dressing, and that Swiss cheese in there—oh, so good. The marble rye is nice and toasted. You gotta try this. I think you’re actually gonna like Reubens.

The sourdough burger was highly recommended. Add bacon; you’ll thank me later. Get the house-made ranch—you won’t be disappointed. We learned a few things about the differences between a New York Reuben and an Omaha Reuben. The New York Reuben is sliced, and the Omaha Reuben is chopped. They say the Omaha Reuben was invented three months earlier than the New York one.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, that ends our time here in Omaha. We hope that you guys enjoyed this article. Please make sure you give it a big thumbs up. It’s free, and it really helps our channel. Hitting that subscribe button would mean so much to us because we’re going to all 50 states this year, and we would love to have you along on the journey. We’ll see you guys next week in state number 34.

A quick note: we didn’t get to see Warren Buffett’s house. His house is worth 0.001% of his wealth. He bought it for $31,000 back in 1957. Sorry about that. Also, we wanted Butter Brickell ice cream, which was invented here in Omaha, but it was closed, and we were pretty full anyway.
